Small Batch Coffee Roasters is an independent speciality coffee roaster in Brighton & Hove, and one of the pioneers of speciality coffee in the UK. It started in 2006 with a simple mission: to make exceptional coffee accessible to everyone. 2026 marks 20 years of Small Batch.
How it started
Small Batch opened its first coffee shop on Goldstone Villas in Hove, next to Hove station, in 2006. From there it has grown from a small roastery into a local favourite and an international brand, but the team's main focus has always stayed the same: taste. To celebrate, co-founder Alan Tomlins came back to the roastery to recreate the 2006 original of Goldstone, their first blend, as OG Goldstone.
How they source and roast
Small Batch buys directly from farmers they know and aims to work with the same farms year after year. As the name says, they roast in small batches to bring out the best in every coffee, and they like to be led by the coffee, not by trends.
Their roastery is in Portslade, on the western edge of Brighton & Hove, with a roastery café alongside. Their coffees have won a string of awards, including three Great Taste stars for their Papua New Guinea Kange in 2024, two stars for their Ethiopia Kebena in 2026, and Gold at the Great British Food Awards for Goldstone.

Small Batch also runs a coffee school, offers barista training and equipment to wholesale customers, and sells Nespresso-compatible coffee pods.
