White Rose Coffee Roasters is an independent speciality coffee roaster in Halifax, West Yorkshire. Head roaster Robert Cooper comes from a family with decades of experience in the coffee trade, and the business roasts a wide range of single origins and blends every week.
A family coffee business
Coffee has always been part of Robert's family, and White Rose describes itself as thirty years in the making. After so long in the coffee trade, moving into roasting was a natural next step. White Rose carries the Made in Yorkshire mark, which promotes food and drink made in the county.
How they roast
White Rose roasts on Toper drum roasters, made in Turkey, where the beans are heated by a gas flame under the drum and by hot air flowing through it. They added a 30kg roaster in 2020 alongside their smaller machines, so they can roast small, fresh batches and larger orders. When we spoke to Robert, his advice to new roasters was: "go bigger than the roaster you think is required", because you can quickly need more capacity.
How they source
Much of White Rose's green coffee is bought through Algrano, a platform that connects roasters directly with coffee producers. It lets them learn more about each coffee, give feedback to the farmers, and see a transparent breakdown of what the farmer receives. They offer a wide choice, with many single origins alongside their blends.
