Routes Coffee is an independent speciality coffee roaster in Oxford. It began in 2015, when two friends took a 1989 Bedford Rascal van on the road and started brewing coffee at festivals and events. Today Routes roasts in Oxford, runs a flagship café in East Oxford, and is the UK's first and only Certified Regenified coffee roaster.
From Australia to Oxford, through 30 countries
The Routes story began in Australia, where the founders fell in love with truly great coffee. On the way home they travelled through more than 30 countries, learning from farmers, roasters, distributors and baristas, from the business districts of Singapore to the side streets of Seoul and the back alleys of Beijing. What struck them most was the care behind every cup, and the sense of community that came with it.
Back in the UK, they found most cafés fell short of what they'd experienced abroad. That gap gave them the idea for a roastery built on ethics, flavour and travel, and the name Routes.
The UK's first Certified Regenified roaster
Routes is proud to be the UK's first and only Certified Regenified Coffee Roaster. It came from years of working with producers who care about soil health, biodiversity and their communities. Colombia is especially close to their hearts, and they've recently visited producers in Colombia and Costa Rica, cupping experimental microlots in Tarrazú and learning how drying affects flavour in Quindío.
How they roast
Routes roasts on two Giesen roasters, a W6 and a W30, chosen for their energy efficiency and precision. Their home coffee is roasted to order in Oxford and sent in compostable packaging, and their range runs from house blends and decaf to single origins, rare lots and Nespresso-compatible pods.
The founders' favourite way to brew at home? Single-serve drippers, for bright, sweet and consistently delicious coffee.
