Round Hill Roastery is an independent speciality coffee roaster just south of Bath, in Somerset. It started in 2012 with a stall at Bath Farmers' Market, and it takes its name from Kelston Round Hill, a well-known landmark near the city.
How it started
Founder Eddie Twitchett was a keen home brewer working in hospitality in Bath. He spent every spare moment brewing and tasting coffee, and in 2012 he decided to roast it himself. He started roasting in a small unit no bigger than a garage and sold his coffee at the farmers' market every week.
The business soon grew and won its first wholesale customers. Round Hill has since moved to a larger roastery at Midsomer Norton, a few miles south of Bath, but the personal touch is still there.
How they source
Round Hill buys small lots from independent growers and seasonal harvests. The team works closely with the farmers they buy from, and visits farms to learn more and find new coffees.
The coffee arrives as green beans, the farmer's finished product, and the team's job is to protect and bring out all the hard work that's gone into it.
How they roast
Each coffee is test roasted, rested, then brewed in several different ways to find its best roast profile. Origin, variety and process all shape how each coffee is roasted, with the aim of bringing out its sweetness and natural flavours.
