Gold Box Roastery is a family-run speciality coffee roaster from the North East of England. It roasts at Blaydon, just west of Newcastle upon Tyne, and supplies cafés and home brewers across the UK.
Competition-level coffee
Gold Box has a strong competition pedigree. Luca Croce, part of the family behind the roastery, is a three-time UK Brewers Cup champion and has represented the UK at the World Brewers Cup. The Brewers Cup is all about hand-brewed filter coffee, so it's a good sign for anyone who loves a pour-over at home.
How they source and roast
When we spoke to the Gold Box team, they told us they buy from trusted importers and go back to the same farms year after year. Those long-term relationships give them access to some special, small lots.
Their roasters see every batch as a chance to learn. As one of them put it to us: "By combining my senses with the data, I'm able to determine how a coffee should express itself in the final cup."
Their advice for anyone starting out as a roaster is simple: roast as much coffee as you can, taste everything, and share what you find with other roasters. When a coffee tastes a certain way, go back to the roast profile to understand why.
