Adagio Teas was founded in 1999 by Michael Cramer along with his mother and brother. Mom started out at the beginning impressing on the world that good tea was an integral part of a good life.
Never in their wildest dreams did they expect to become Internet zillionaires.
For them, they just wanted to do something about the gourmet tea market and produce tea that was full of flavour, and never lost its original character.
They wanted nothing more than to expand single-origin tea to what was then an uncaring world.
How it All Began
They did not have a lot of money to start with, so they did what they could and built a beautiful website and worked hard with their marketing materials so that they could get their teas in front of the world.
At first, selling tea locally seemed like the right answer. Michael offered to help mom in her research, which uncovered that a tearoom can't succeed on tea alone.
They realized that most offer sandwiches, salad, and soups, rendering them as a restaurant which is not what they really wanted.
All they really wanted to do was bring gourmet tea to a country that barely knew it was an idea.
They decided to let Ilya, the younger son, run with his idea of online sales which would offer the most efficient means of bringing Mom's dream to life.
Being able to offer tea nationally rather than locally was much more exciting for all three family members.
The brothers who loved tea as much as mom did and had a passion for bringing their flavour creations to life decided to create an online tea store they called Adagio.
Adagio is a musical term meaning "slow," or "at ease." The word perfectly captured tea helping their customers unwind, slow down and relax.
What You Will Find Today at Adagio
