Rounton Coffee Roasters is an independent speciality coffee roaster in East Rounton, a village near Northallerton in North Yorkshire. Founded by David Beattie in 2013, it roasts in a converted granary and has grown from a farmers' market stall into a roaster supplying coffee across the UK.
From chemical engineering to coffee
David trained as a chemical engineer and, by the age of 30, was running a large industrial gases site on Teesside. His real passion was travel, though, so he left the corporate world to see the world.
He travelled across Europe, Russia and Mongolia, but it was a visit to Sumatra that changed everything. Meeting coffee farmers there and hearing about the challenges they faced, he fell in love with coffee and came home with the idea for Rounton.
Fair prices for great coffee
That trip still shapes the business. Rounton's aim is to help farmers like the ones David met earn a sustainable living that reflects the quality of their coffee. The team works with quality-focused suppliers and has visited farms at origin, and Rounton is a member of 1% for the Planet.
How they roast
The granary in East Rounton is still home. Today the team roasts on two Loring roasters, and they roast in small batches to bring out the best in each coffee.
