80 Stone Coffee Roasters is an independent speciality coffee roaster in Croydon, south London. It was started by two friends, Simone and Roberto, who share a lifelong love of coffee and roast for home brewers, cafés and businesses across the UK.
How it began
Simone and Roberto became friends in 2006, working together in a London restaurant. Roberto grew up around a coffee shop in Verona, while Simone has always worked in coffee: roasting, engineering and barista training. Their careers took them to different countries, but coffee brought them back together in London.
In 2015 they bought a 5kg FIMT roaster, refurbished it themselves and started roasting. The name? The roaster weighed about 80 stone, and they were both born in the '80s.
From the farm to the roastery
Before 80 Stone, Simone spent time in Guatemala working in the cupping department of one of the country's biggest coffee exporters, tasting and grading coffees. It taught him that great coffee starts on the farm. Today they work with trusted importers and producers who put quality, sustainability and fair relationships first.
How they roast
As they grew, they added a much larger 30kg Petroncini roaster alongside the original. Their aim when roasting is to develop each coffee just enough to bring out its character, without masking what makes it special. Their range covers espresso blends, single origins and rarer lots.
As well as roasting, 80 Stone supplies cafés with wholesale coffee, sells and installs espresso machines and offers barista training.
